A trio of officers perished and more than a dozen additional individuals got wounded in what appears to be premeditated blast caused by gas at a rural property in northern Italy.

How It Happened

The blast took place as police and firefighters entered the house close to the Verona region to execute an eviction order for two brothers and a sister who were older adults.

The three victims who died belonged to the Carabinieri force.

Legal Proceedings

A man and a woman were taken into custody at the scene and a third person who escaped subsequent to the explosion was located not long after. The trio have been transported to medical facility.

The explosion could be heard some 5km (3 miles) away and photographs from the area revealed the structure turned into a pile of rubble.

“We are in a period of mourning,” said the Minister of the Interior the Interior Minister, who added that attempts had been made to evict the three siblings in the past.

Financial Context

The president of the Veneto region, the regional head, said the residence was under an court order due to unpaid amounts incurred by the property owners.

Conflict resolution experts had been dispatched to engage the siblings who had secured themselves into the property. When the police arrived soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), investigators suspect one of the residents caused the explosion.

“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” regional commander Commander Papagno told news outlets.

A gas canister had been set off, and the explosion immediately struck our officers,” he said.

Petrol bombs were also located at the residence, the interior minister confirmed.

Impact Assessment

Those injured by the blast consisted of 11 other members of the military police as well as three officers of Italy's state police and a emergency responder.

Based on information from the local prosecutor, the building was in a derelict state and had lacked electrical service.

The official was convinced the explosion had happened on a floor above the access point and told the press it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Shortly before the incident, he mentioned members had “noticed a hissing sound, presumably the propane tanks being turned on”.

Community Reaction

“We all knew the situation was dire,” neighbors told reporters, adding that the trio had previously threatened to “cause an explosion” rather than be evicted.

“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”

Minister of Defence the Defence Minister united with other government officials in commemorating the three officers who had died in the service of their country.
