I thought I edged it - Alex Carey on DRS survival.
Australian gloveman Alex Carey stated he felt he had nicked the ball when he was given not out on DRS during day one of the third Ashes series Test versus the English.
After surviving on 72, Carey went on to make a superb 106 to aid the Australians post 326-8 at the stumps in Adelaide.
The Key Moment
The home side were 245-6 when Carey went for a cut to seamer Josh Tongue.
England appealed confidently, thinking they had heard an nick, but on-field official Ahsan Raza gave it not out.
Following captain Ben Stokes challenged the on-field call, the replay reviewed by TV umpire Chris Gaffaney indicated a spike although this appeared before the ball had passed the bat.
Gaffaney added he was of the opinion there was a clearance between bat and ball.
Consequently, Carey was given not out.
"I thought there was a feather or some sort of noise when it passed the bat," said Carey.
"Being given out would have prompted a review, though not a confident one. It was a nice sound as it passed the bat."
Technology Debate
Questions have been raised about 'the sound wave technology' during the series after a number of dubious incidents.
England's bowling coach David Saker suggested the touring side may pursue this most recent incident further with match referee Jeff Crowe.
"We haven't acted yet, but following today's events, that could change," Saker remarked.
"We've had doubts about it throughout. The focus should be on cricket, not technology failures. That's the situation."
A Special Hundred
Carey's century was his first in Test cricket against England.
It was also an emotional moment for Carey, whose dad died in recent months. His spouse was crying in the crowd as the batter marked the occasion by glancing upward.
"To make a hundred here in front of home fans and family was special," stated Carey.
"I guess you know as well why I was looking to the heavens. I'm trying not to tear up. It was a fantastic feeling."
History of Controversy
This isn't Carey's first brush with Ashes drama.
He was the wicketkeeper who notoriously dismissed Jonny Bairstow at Lord's Cricket Ground in the 2023 series, which created a febrile final day.
Speaking about his survival he continued: "The sound wave didn't match up. It is just the way cricket goes - sometimes you have a bit of luck."
"Perhaps luck was on my side."
