The Banking Giant Warned US Authorities About More Than $1 Billion in Epstein-Related Financial Activities Potentially Tied to Human Trafficking
Newly unsealed records disclose that America's largest bank submitted a suspicious activity report in 2019 warning federal authorities about over $1 billion in transactions connected to the convicted sex offender that were potentially related to trafficking activities.
Bank's Comprehensive Reporting of Questionable Activity
The banking giant identified approximately 4,700 transactions totaling over $1 billion that were possibly connected to human trafficking reports involving Epstein, as reported in the recently unsealed legal records.
This documentation was filed just weeks after Epstein's death in a Manhattan detention facility and also highlighted wire transfers made by the financier to Russian banks.
Prominent Individuals Named in Report
The SAR identified several well-known corporate leaders and persons in association with the questionable financial activities, including:
- The Apollo co-founder, who departed from the private equity firm in 2021
- Glenn Dubin, an established investment professional
- Alan Dershowitz, who served as one of Epstein's lawyers
- Financial entities under the direction of billionaire businessman the retail magnate
This documentation particularly noted $65 million in wire transfers from the mid-2000s that appeared to move between multiple banks associated with the Wexner-controlled entities.
Judicial and Political Examination
The bank's 15-year relationship with the convicted sex offender has emerged as a focus of major judicial examination and government interest.
The unsealed documents were part of legal proceedings from 2023 filed by the US Virgin Islands, where the financier maintained a personal island property and conducted the majority of his monetary operations.
Furthermore, women who were trafficked by the financier also were involved in the lawsuit, which the banking institution ultimately resolved.
Financial Institution's Response and Oversight Context
A spokesperson for the bank stated that the publication of the SARs shows the institution had alerted oversight authorities about Epstein appropriately.
The representative stated: "The SARs do confirm what was previously suspected: the bank filed SARs about the financier early on, and particularly when it terminated relationship with him from the bank in 2013 – and repeatedly between 2013 and 2019, as required."
The representative continued: "It does not appear that federal authorities or investigative agencies acted on those SARs for years."
Individual Reactions and Judicial Status
Representatives for the named individuals have issued various responses regarding their inclusion in the report:
- The hedge fund manager's spokesperson asserted that the referenced financial activities were unrelated to the financier's illegal activities
- Alan Dershowitz claimed the only funds he received from the financier were for professional legal work
- The private equity founder's spokesperson declined to comment
It is important to note, none of the individuals identified in the documentation have been charged with crimes in connection to the financier.
