Walmart Enforces Buying Restrictions on Pokémon Trading Cards

In a significant move, Walmart has begun implementing strict limits on how many Pokémon trading card products customers can acquire during one shopping trip. This policy officially takes effect as of early November, based on a company memo shared with employees.

Tackling Reseller Problems

While not officially confirmed by Walmart, many believe this decision was influenced by a widely shared social media clip that showed a customer purchasing a massive amount of Pokémon card items at a checkout counter. The employee seen in the video received significant criticism for allowing the bulk transaction to go through.

Policy Details and Potential Loopholes

The new restriction specifies that shoppers may only buy a maximum of five trading card packs or boxes per store visit. Yet, the language has raised questions due to its lack of clarity. What exactly qualifies as a "box" remains unclear, and if someone could still purchase five premium Elite Trainer Boxes is uncertain.

Moreover, since the limit is based on individual trips, in theory an eager reseller could return repeatedly—buying five items each time—to gather significant stocks throughout the day.

The Reseller Crisis

For the average collector, this approach might seem over the top, but for scalpers, it's standard practice. Over the past few seasons, scalpers have significantly added to widespread shortages of Pokémon cards, driven by the TCG's growing fame.

Certain buyers aim to sell unopened products at a markup, while others search for rare cards that can command extraordinary prices. As an example, the Mega Lucario ex card from the latest set is currently selling for over $800 on various platforms.

Looking Ahead

The new rule coincides with the approaching launch of the latest Pokémon expansion, scheduled for November 14th. Pre-release sales already show chase cards like the Charizard mega evolution listed for nearly $1,500, emphasizing the ongoing demand and likely reseller attention.

With any luck, the retail limits will curb mass buying and increase access for true fans and everyday enthusiasts alike.
